Frigate's Passage, one of the best surf breaks in Fiji, is a fantastic world-class surf break, a consistent hollow left. It is surely not for the timid, but for the experienced and the surf enthusiast. Frigate's is one of the few breaks in Fiji, or all the South Pacific, where it is possible to surf all day, on a high or low tide.
Frigates Reef is a perfect, hollow, world class left hander you can surf all day. It breaks into open ocean at the fringe of Beqa Lagoon. The prevailing wind is offshore tradewind and it gets swell nearly every day of the year so it is hardly ever unrideable. This is rare in Fiji.
Many surf breaks in Fiji get blown out by the tradewinds but not Frigates. The wave face is protected at low tide by the exposed reef, so Frigate's is an extremely clean wave even with a strong wind. Frigate's Reef is twelve miles from the large island of Viti Levu but close to tiny Beqa Island. There is no land mass nearby to upset wind direction or create rainfall.
Depending on the swell, Frigates Reef can offer a variety of surfing conditions. The big days will challenge the most experienced surfer while the smaller days can be fun for everyone.
Surf trips to Frigates Passage are on our party barge, the Buli Kula. Hard core surfers can take the Luve Ni Wai out to Frigates Passage for a less comfortable day of surfing at a lower cost. Both trips include a picnic lunch and refreshments, drinking water and juice and plenty of shade for relaxation.
Scuba divers and snorkelers can also enjoy the trips to Frigate's Passage. The wall diving is a pleasant change from the pinnacles of the Lagoon and the coral that forms the reef is an abundance of snorkeling pleasure.
